The Honda Click 160 and the Honda PCX: Which One Is Right for You?
Let's take a look at the differences and similarities between these two very popular rental scooters in Chiang Mai. Both are everywhere on the roads, both are offered by almost every rental shop, and both are fantastic machines. But they're not quite the same. Here's everything you need to know to decide which one is right for your trip.
The primary difference between these very similar bikes is the frame and the riding position. The PCX has a straddle riding position, meaning you have to climb over the bike and sit with the fuel tank between your legs. This is fine for most riders, but it can be awkward if you are wearing a skirt. The Honda Click has a step-through design, which is far more convenient in this regard. Because your legs are tucked in behind the bike, they are also more protected against the elements, which is a huge bonus in the rain.
You also get a handy hook for hanging a grocery bag on the Click, a small but convenient addition that the PCX does not have.
The Honda Click 160 and the PCX have identical engines. They are the same 160cc four-stroke engine in both models, and the engine parts can be used in either bike.So they both have the same power and torque, making them amazing bikes for both the city and the mountain roads like the one heading up to the top of Doi Suthep or the Samoeng Loop.
The PCX does have a larger underseat storage capacity. This is because the PCX's fuel tank is moved to the location between your legs, which in turn frees up space under the seat. The PCX can store two helmets, whereas the Click can only fit one under the seat. For some riders this is a deciding factor.
The PCX has less storage at the front, though. Both bikes have a phone compartment with USB charging, but the Click 160 also has a large box compartment for things like drinks, snacks, and small items. For most daily use, the Click's front storage and grocery hook often prove more practical than the PCX's larger but less accessible underseat space.
Both the Honda Click 160 and the PCX are very capable machines, and both are suited for the busy city streets and also the mountain roads of Chiang Mai. Each handles the stop-and-go crawl of the old city with the same ease as the long, sweeping bends up toward Doi Suthep, and both feel right at home whether you're dodging songthaews or cruising through the countryside. They have the same engine and the same power, so neither bike will leave you struggling on a steep incline or feeling out of place in heavy traffic.
Whether you are riding around the city or spending a day exploring the Samoeng Loop, both bikes will get you there comfortably and reliably. The Click does it with a more upright, step-through posture, while the PCX offers a sportier, straddle position, but in terms of what they can actually do on the road, they are evenly matched. They just offer two equally valid ways to enjoy the same ride.
Another factor to consider is the price. A Click 160 will cost between 4,000 and 4,500 THB per month, or 400-450 THB per day, whereas a PCX would be 5,000 THB or more per month and 500-600 THB per day.
For riders on a budget, the Click offers essentially the same performance and city-friendly features for roughly 20% less. Whether the PCX's larger storage and sportier stance are worth the extra cost is a personal decision.
