Documents You'll Need Before Renting a Scooter

You will generally need three things to rent a scooter in Chiang Mai: your passport, a cash deposit and a valid driving license. While some rental shops may not ask to see a driving license, it is recommended that you carry one.

passport requirements

Most scooter rental shops in Chiang Mai will ask to see your passport and take a photocopy or photograph for their records. Some companies may ask to keep your passport as security, but we recommend choosing a rental company that accepts a cash deposit instead. Leaving your passport with a rental company can leave you vulnerable to scams or disputes over alleged damage and additional charges.

Deposit Requirements

One of the most common questions we receive from customers is whether they need to leave a deposit when renting a scooter. Reputable rental companies will usually require a refundable cash deposit rather than asking customers to surrender their passport. Deposit amounts vary between rental shops and scooter models, so it's always worth confirming the amount before you sign the rental agreement. As a general guide, you can expect to leave a deposit of around 2,000 THB for a typical scooter rental in Chiang Mai.

Document your rental bike condition thoroughly

Before leaving the rental shop, take a few minutes to thoroughly document the scooter's condition. Photograph all body panels, existing scratches, mirrors, wheels and any other visible marks, then record a walk-around video showing the scooter from every angle. It is also a good idea to photograph the odometer and fuel gauge. Having a clear record of the scooter's condition can help prevent misunderstandings or disputes when it is time to return the vehicle.

check the tires

The condition of the tires plays a major role in both safety and handling. Check that there is sufficient tread remaining across the tire surface and look for any visible cracks, cuts or signs of excessive wear. The tyres should also appear properly inflated, as underinflated tyres can affect braking performance and stability, particularly on wet roads or when riding up Doi Suthep or around the Samoeng Loop.

Test the Brakes

Before riding away, test both the front and rear brakes to ensure they respond smoothly and effectively. Some scooters have rear drum brakes, which will feel weaker to the front disc brake, but they should still stop the bike easily.

Check the Lights

Many travellers forget to check the lights, but doing so only takes a moment and can prevent problems later. Confirm that the headlight works correctly, both front and rear indicators flash properly, and the brake light illuminates when either brake lever is applied.

Check Fuel Level

Check the fuel gauge. Most rental shops provide scooters with a full tank and expect them to be returned full.

What Is Normally Included?

When you rent a scooter, you should generally receive a copy of your rental contract, the scooter key and at least one helmet. Before leaving the rental shop, make sure you have everything you need and that any details on the contract are correct.

the key

Many modern scooters use smart keys rather than traditional ignition keys. These proximity-based keys are expensive to replace, so it is important to keep them safe throughout your rental. We like to fit our keys with lanyards that can be worn around the neck, helping to reduce the risk of accidental loss. Read more about the smart key and how to use the Honda Click 160i

some helmets that are provided to all our customers

helmets

One of our customers recently told us they rented a scooter on an island in southern Thailand and weren't given a helmet at all! Shocking! Every scooter rental should include at least one helmet as standard. If you plan to carry a passenger, ask for a second helmet, which should be provided at no extra cost. Try the helmets on to make sure they fit properly and that the chin straps fasten securely.

understanding the rental contract

Most scooter rental contracts will outline the rental period, deposit amount, customer responsibilities for damage, insurance terms and any late return charges. Take a few minutes to read the agreement carefully and make sure you understand what is and is not covered. If anything is unclear, ask the rental company for clarification before signing the contract.

Ask for a Copy

Once the agreement has been signed, ask for a copy of the contract or take a clear photograph of the completed document. Take it with you when you return the bike.

contact information

Whenever possible, try to connect with the shop on messaging apps such as WhatsApp, WeChat, or Facebook instead of just saving their phone number. If you or the staff struggle with English, text-based communication makes it much easier to use translation tools and resolve any issues smoothly.

insurance misunderstandings

I think people often misunderstand how accident insurance works for rental scooters in Thailand. The truth is, rental scooters generally cannot be insured. Insurance companies don't offer policies for them. That's why most rental shops require customers to take responsibility for any damage they cause.

Health insurance 'por ror bor'

Every vehicle in Thailand is legally required to carry what's called "Por Ror Bor" – a basic form of accident health insurance. If a rider gets injured while on the scooter, this government insurance helps cover some of the hospital costs. The important thing to know is that it also covers tourists, not just Thai citizens.

We going into more detail about this on our 'what if I have an accident page'.

scams and things to watch out for

Most people visiting Thailand have heard at least one horror story about a scooter rental gone wrong. We even had a friend who rented a big bike and was later asked to pay for damage that he didn't cause.

What sometimes happens is upon returning the bike to the rental shop, they may point out scratches or damages and demand huge sums as compensation.

Fortunately, these situations are much less common nowadays, but they are a good reminder to thoroughly document the condition of your scooter before you ride away and to never leave your passport! Read about what happens if you have an accident or damage the bike.

look for scratch insurance

What many rental companies describe as "scratch insurance" is simply an agreement not to charge customers for minor scratches, small scuffs and general wear and tear. We strongly recommend choosing a rental company that offers this protection, as it provides peace of mind and helps reduce the risk of disagreements over cosmetic damage when the scooter is returned.

major damage

We recommend choosing a rental company with a clear and transparent damage policy. Before signing the contract, make sure you understand what you may be charged for and how repair costs are calculated. This helps ensure that if damage does occur during your rental, you will pay a fair price and avoid any unexpected or inflated charges. Read about our damage policy and replacement parts pricelist.

Tips for Riding a bike in Chiang Mai

Ride on the Left
One of the first things you'll notice in Chiang Mai is that most local scooter riders stay towards the left-hand side of the road. This allows faster vehicles to overtake safely using the right-hand lanes. We always advise our customers to do the same. Ride slow, stay to the left, follow the local scooters.

Parking Your Scooter
Parking a scooter in Chiang Mai is generally very easy and you can pretty much park anywhere. As a general rule, avoid parking next to kerbs painted red and white, as these usually indicate parking restrictions. Whenever you park, make sure you lock the scooter. While security is important, we often find customers accidentally leave the ignition switched on, which can drain the battery. Modern scooters do not have kick-starts, so if the battery dies, the bike cannot be used. Locking the bike assures the battery is off.

Remember to turn off your turn-signals!
Unlike a car, a scooter will not automatically turn off the turn signals after you complete a turn. We regularly see tourists riding around Chiang Mai for several minutes with their indicator still flashing without realizing it. Try to get into the habit of checking or simply pressing the turn signal switch occasionally to make sure they are off.

Flashing Headlights Means Something Different
Visitors from the UK, Europe and some other countries are often surprised to learn that flashing headlights can mean something very different in Thailand. In many Western countries, flashing your lights is often used to let another driver go or pull out. In Thailand, it usually means the opposite. If another vehicle flashes its headlights, they are telling you to stop and to not pull out!
