renting a scooter in the old city, chiang mai

With decades of riding experience in Chiang Mai, our team at Scooter Hub knows the Old City well. Public transport here is limited. Songthaews are hard to use without speaking Thai, and tuk-tuks are very expensive. That is why a scooter is the best way to get around. Whether you are visiting Wat Phra Singh, grabbing coffee near Tha Phae Gate, or heading to the Night Bazaar, having your own bike makes everything easier. We deliver to any hotel, guesthouse, or Airbnb inside the Old City. No need to come to us. Just give us a call, and we bring a fully serviced Honda Click 160 straight to your door.

Riding a scooter here is a ton of fun too! You will find the enjoyment and excitement of riding in Chiang Mai will be a memory in itself!

the honda click 160

Our team has been riding scooters and motorcycles in and around Chiang Mai for years. We all agree that the Honda Click 160 is the best bike to rent here. It is small and agile, making it a great choice for narrow city backstreets, but it is also a wonderful bike to take into the mountains or on the Samoeng Loop.

We asked local Thai riders, expats, and our customers which bike is best. They all agree with us. The Honda Click 160.

our customers also ask us ...

Do I need a passport to rent a scooter in Chiang Mai?
Thai law prevents businesses from keeping your actual passport as a deposit. We never hold your passport. A photocopy is fine.

How do I rent a scooter?
Reach out to us by phone at 0653480108 or message us on WhatsApp, WeChat, Facebook, or Line.

Can I take the bike to other provinces? Can I ride the Mae Hong Son Loop or ride to Chiang Rai?
We prefer our scooters stay close to Chiang Mai so we can assist quickly if something goes wrong. That means keeping within roughly 30 kilometres of the city. You can still enjoy great local rides like the Samoeng Loop or explore Doi Suthep. But longer journeys like the Mae Hong Son Loop or a trip to Chiang Rai are not permitted.

What happens if I scratch or damage the bike?
A few scuffs here and there? Do not worry about it. Riding in Chiang Mai means small scratches are almost guaranteed, so we include scratch cover at no extra cost on every bike. We live and ride in this city every day. We know that minor marks are just part of the experience. If you have a serious crash or cause major damage, do not stress. We have a straightforward repair policy with no hidden charges.

How much is the deposit?
We take a 2000 baht deposit when you rent a bike. You get the full amount back at the end of your rental.

Should I rent a scooter in Chiang Mai?
Forget about trains, trams, or buses. Chiang Mai has none of them. Public transport here is basically non existent, so a scooter ends up being your cheapest and fastest way to get around. It leaves cars and taxis in the dust. We have sat through more traffic jams than we can count on Nimman Road and inside the Old City, each time wishing we were on two wheels instead of stuck in a car. Riding around Chiang Mai is also genuinely enjoyable.

What is the best scooter to rent in Chiang Mai?
We have spent decades riding every kind of bike around Chiang Mai. In our experience, the Honda Click 160cc comes out on top. It gives you more power than the smaller 110cc or 125cc models, yet it stays light and agile. That mix of strength and size is ideal for weaving through heavy traffic on the Moonmuang Road or making your way around the busy Old City. And when you head into the hills, it performs just as well. The ride up to Mon Jam in Samoeng feels smooth and capable with a Click 160.

Do I need a driving license to ride in Chiang Mai?
The law is clear. You need either a valid International Driving Permit or a Thai Driving License to ride in Thailand. But let us be honest about what you actually want to know. What happens if you ride without one? The truth is that riding without a proper license is very common here, especially in tourist areas. Police checkpoints do exist, and there is a fine if you get pulled over. But many travelers ride for weeks without ever being asked for their license. We are not telling you to break the law. We are just telling you what we see on the streets every day.Read more about riding here with or without a license.
