Do I Need a Passport to rent a Scooter in Chiang Mai?
Most scooter rental companies in Chiang Mai will ask to see your passport when you rent a scooter or car. However, some shops also require you to leave your passport with them as security for the rental. We strongly recommend avoiding any rental company that asks you to surrender your passport. Your passport is your most important travel document and should remain with you at all times.Many reputable rental companies, including ours, do not keep customers' passports. Instead, we simply require a photocopy or photo of your passport for identification purposes.
When renting a scooter in Chiang Mai, you should have:
1) A photocopy or photo of your passport
2) A valid driving licence
3) A refundable cash deposit
If a rental shop insists on holding your passport, it is usually best to choose a different provider.
