I'm currently sitting outside Brewginnings, a lovely little coffee shop on Chiang Moi Road, watching a constant stream of scooters pass by. Locals, tourists, delivery riders, you name it. What is genuinely surprising is how many people aren't wearing helmets. If you spent an afternoon people-watching here, you could be forgiven for thinking that wearing a helmet isn't required by law. 

It is.

Let's be honest, most of us have done it at some point. You've just needed to pop down to 7-Eleven, the journey is only a couple of minutes, and putting on a helmet feels like a hassle. It's a bad habit, it's unsafe, and it's also illegal.

What Is the Fine for Not Wearing a Helmet in Thailand?

Be warned. If you are riding around without a helmet as a tourist, there is a very good chance that you will be stopped by local traffic police and fined accordingly. 

The fine for not wearing a helmet used to be just 500 baht, but as of 2026 it has increased to 2,000 baht. 

Another thing to consider is that riding without a helmet attracts unnecessary attention. If you are stopped for not wearing a helmet, the police officer may also ask to see your driving licence and passport. If there are any additional issues, such as not having the correct licence, further fines may apply.The simplest solution is to wear a helmet every time you ride, even for short journeys.
